The focus of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is the relationship between Joel and his eccentric girlfriend, Clementine. The plot begins with Joel’s decision to have Clementine erased from his memory after she does the same to him.
Clementine dyes her hair numerous times during the film. The timeline of the film is non linear but placed in the order events actually occurred each colour symbolizes the current stage of her relationship with Joel:
Green, when the relationship is new.
Red, when the couple begin to fall in love.
Orange, as they begin to lose their passion for each other and begin to argue more often.
Blue, before their break up and after having each other removed from their memories.
Finally, the blank space in the bottom right corner represents Clementine’s disappearance from his memory
""I sloshed away from the bar with my drink, sending little tsunamis of beer onto my hands, soaking into the wrist of my shirt. Don’t ask me what I was wearing. Something to impress What’s-Her-Name, the girl I wasn’t dating"."
